Diwali is the festival dedicated to the divine mother MahaLakshmi – the goddess of fertility and prosperity. The season of autumn begins with the navratris, the nine days of celebration of the divine feminine, culminating in Dussehra. Diwali is celebrated at the other end of autumn, starting on Dhanteras and ending with the main festival two days later on the darkest night of the month Karthik.

It is believed that on Dhanteras, ‘Dhanvantri’, the physician of Gods, appeared from the ocean as a result of its churning by Devas and Asuras. The word ‘dhan’ means wealth. Hence, to celebrate this occasion, people buy wealth in the form of gold.
Another popular story about Dhanteras narrates the incident of the 16-year-old son of King Hima. Hima’s son was predicted to die on the fourth day of his marriage by a snake bite. In a bid to protect him, his wife places a huge heap of gold and silver coins at the entrance to their house and lights up a lot of diyas. When the God of death, Yama, tries to enter their house, he is dazzled by the gold and momentarily blinded by the glittering light. Hence, he retraces his steps. Dhanteras is celebrated to commemorate King Hima’s daughter-in-law and hence, people buy gold and silver coins.
Since Diwali is the festival of Goddess Lakshmi, who is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Dhanteras (i.e the 13^th day of the month of Karthik, ‘teras’ meaning 13^th and ‘dhan’ meaning wealth) is celebrated as a harbinger of this wealth. People buy new items including gold and silver coins in order to invite Lakshmi into their houses.
